here's a hot take: i'm kinda sick to death of angry gruff videogame man and also broody mysterious videogame man. they‘re not relatable but more imporantly, they‘re boring. there's no layers to them, no intricacy. smash man smash thing. peak nuance in AAA games is when smash man angry, but also sad.

thanks to a lot of people (mainly women) being loud and suffering through death threats a decade or so ago, we now also have the strong female lead. thing is, a strong female lead doesn't really address what bothers me about a strong male lead. so it's basically the same thing. smash woman smash thing. however i'm happy to say that in recent years more and more developers have started to embrace what is truly the most relatable protagonist – egg.

egg is fragile and useless, just like you. egg has no special powers, just like you. egg has no personality apart from what you project onto it. life is hard for egg - not because the gods tricked it into murdering its family and now it has to murder them in return, while wearing said family as makeup - but because being an egg is not very nice.

but egg is also a symbol of potential, growth and change - just like you. egg can become anything if it puts its mind to it - just like you. if you can achieve greatness and victory as this pathetic, incompetent, inconsequential little thing - then you can do anything.

also it‘s hella cheap to model, texture and animate so maybe think about that the next time a CEO complains how their game sold 10 million copies and still failed to meet sales targets.
